Next steps after referral

We know that asking for support can feel like a big step. Once you’ve made a referral, we’ll guide you through what happens next.

We receive your referral
After your referral has been made, you’ll receive a series of emails containing short videos from Guy’s Gift over the following four weeks.

These will introduce you to Guy’s Gift, explain what to expect, and provide helpful information about children and young people’s grief and how you can support them.

We’ll invite you to talk to us
In the fourth email, we’ll invite you to book an assessment. For some families, they find the emails sufficient to help them along the way. For others having a chat with us and looking at the next steps is really important too. Whatever is best for your family, we’re here to support.

The assessment call happens either via telephone or video call, and is an opportunity for us to understand more about the bereavement, how it has affected your child and family, and what you feel your child may need. We’ll talk about what has happened, how things are for your family now, and any concerns you may have.

We’ll then discuss what support might be most helpful and what happens next.

Accessing direct support
If your child is going to receive support from Guy’s Gift, there may be a wait before sessions can begin.

We’ll keep you informed and let you know what to expect. We welcome emails or calls from you during this time to check in too.
