Bereavement Support Pack Volunteer

This role is part of our Bereavement Support Pack project, which provides support packs to hospitals to give to families when someone dies.

As a volunteer, you’ll help prepare and distribute packs filled with books, guidance, and resources, giving families the guidance and support them need in the early days after the death of someone important.

Why this role matters

When a child or young person experiences the death of someone close, the immediate environment, especially in a hospital, can feel overwhelming and confusing.

Bereavement support packs provide comfort, reassurance, and gentle guidance in those early moments. These packs are designed to be given directly to children and young people, helping them begin to process their grief in a safe and supported way.

As a volunteer, you’ll play a key role in ensuring these packs are thoughtfully prepared and ready to reach those who need them most.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Preparing bereavement support packs with care and attention

  • Assembling resources (e.g. books, activity materials, comfort items)

  • Checking packs for quality, completeness, and age-appropriateness

  • Assisting with packing sessions (individually or as part of a group)

  • Helping with delivering packs to local hospitals

You’ll be contributing to something very practical, but deeply meaningful.

What we’re looking for

  • A compassionate and thoughtful approach

  • Attention to detail and care in preparing materials

  • Ability to follow guidance on pack contents and presentation

  • Comfort working with sensitive themes (loss and grief)

  • Reliability and a willingness to work as part of a team

You don’t need prior experience in bereavement support—just the right attitude.

Time commitment

This role is usually carried out in short, flexible sessions.

Typically, volunteers help prepare packs in batches (around 20 at a time), which usually takes a couple of hours per session.

What support you’ll receive

  • Guidance on the purpose and impact of the packs

  • Clear instructions on pack contents and assembly

  • Ongoing support from the team

  • A welcoming volunteer community

You’ll always be supported—this is a team effort.

What you’ll need

  • A practical, hands-on approach

  • Attention to detail when assembling packs

  • Respect for confidentiality and the sensitive nature of the work
