Bereavement Theories and Practice

This one-hour session is designed to give volunteers a practical understanding of bereavement and how children, young people and adults may experience grief differently.

Although this training is not mandatory, it is encouraged for all Guy’s Gift volunteers, whether or not you work directly with children and young people. Understanding bereavement helps you feel more confident talking about our work and explaining the support we provide.

The session will cover:

  • How children, young people and adults can experience and express grief

  • Key theories and models of bereavement

  • How grief can affect behaviour, emotions and relationships

  • Factors that can influence a person’s experience of bereavement

  • How to talk sensitively about death and bereavement

  • Practical approaches that can help when supporting someone who is grieving

  • How this understanding relates to the work we do at Guy’s Gift
