Support Interventions and Coping Mechanisms

This one-hour session explores the practical interventions and coping strategies used to support children and young people following bereavement. It is particularly useful for volunteers who may be involved in, or supporting, our group and 1:1 work.

The session is encouraged for all Guy’s Gift volunteers, whether or not you work directly with children and young people. It will give you a better understanding of the activities and approaches you may come across in our support sessions, as well as helping you talk confidently about the work we do.

The session will cover:

  • Practical activities and interventions used in group and 1:1 bereavement support

  • Examples of creative, reflective and discussion-based activities that CYP may take part in

  • Different coping mechanisms and ways of helping children and young people manage grief

  • How activities can be adapted to suit different ages, needs and circumstances

  • The role of volunteers in supporting activities and creating a safe, supportive environment

  • When a child or young person may need additional or specialist support
